CCIDA Success Stories: NRG
In late 2016 NRG announced intentions to resume development work on the Dunkirk Gas Addition Project as soon as possible. The project would add natural gas as the primary fuel for its existing electrical generating station which has operated as a coal-fueled station since 1950. Three of the existing coal units would be modified to run on clean-burning natural gas as their primary fuel source. The project would keep the station in operation for the long term and retain jobs, provide a stable tax basis, contribute significantly to the region’s economy, maintain NY electrical system reliability, and help relieve system congestion in WNY, which will help keep power prices down. The project would generate 435 MW, enough power for 348,000 average households.
