The Western New York Section of the American Planning Association has awarded the Chautauqua County Greenway Plan the “2013 Outstanding Planning Award for Comprehensive Planning.” This prestigious award was presented to County officials at WNY APA’s 2013 Awards Banquet and Business Meeting held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Chef’s Restaurant in Buffalo. Receiving the award on behalf of the County were Bill Daly, Director of Planning & Economic Development (CCPED); and Mark Geise, CCPED Deputy Director and Project Manager. Major contributors to the project who were not present at the awards banquet include John Buerkle and Mike Kotyk, Pashek Associates (Project Consultant); Lisa Schmidtfrerick-Miller, Steering Committee Chairperson; and Don McCord, CCPED Senior Planner, and Greg Edwards, Chautauqua County Executive.
Development of the Chautauqua County Greenway Plan, which was approved for funding by the County Legislature in 2012, extended over the course of more than a year and consisted of broad community stakeholder input. A top recommendation from the County Comprehensive Plan: Chautauqua 20/20, the Chautauqua County Greenway Plan provides a prioritized list of recommended actions to be taken to develop a system of water and land-based trails and green space, as well as areas to be conserved, that will serve to promote and preserve our coveted natural assets and act as an economic development catalyst. The Chautauqua County Greenway Plan was completed in April 2013, and various demonstration projects from the Plan are currently underway. Chautauqua County was awarded the same award for the County’s Comprehensive Plan – Chautauqua 20/20 in 2011.
